The Lockdown Diaries | Week 15

|
A LOCKDOWN BIRTHDAY! A few months ago, none of us would have imagined a world where hugging a close friend or family member would feel like a luxury from a past life. And while that’s a sad and difficult thing to deal with every day, it can feel especially hard on a birthday. We had so many plans for our little ones birthday and we are feeling incredibly guilty that we can't celebrate the way she wanted.

We made plans to visit the Harry Potter Studios and spend a weekend in London visiting all the special landmarks, well as many as we could cram into one weekend. We all knew that wasn't possible. But with a little ingenuity and a lot of online ordering, celebrating our daughter turning six wasn't too bad at all - and according to our little girl it was the best birthday EVER

Our daughter was fully aware that her party plans had to be a little different this year. We could see on her little face that she was disappointed that we couldn't go to London or visit the Harry Potter Studio, and she wasn't the only one -  we were all looking forward to a London adventure. But children are so resilient and tend to adapt easily with change. So a smaller, more intimate celebration was on the cards this year.

We had pretty pink party balloons, played games, opened present and of course tucked into a little sausage dog cake to go along with her brand new puppy she got a couple of weeks ago. We also had a couple of socially distanced visits from family, and honestly it was so good to finally see them in the flesh but again it was hard for our daughter to understand that she couldn't give them a cuddle. Hopefully this nightmare will be over soon. We also enjoyed a little afternoon tea which was so delicious but in this heat, hot tea was the furthest thing from our minds and so we opted for some nice cool smoothies - it was such a great way to celebrate turning six.

We did take Winston to the vet that morning, but if anything that was the highlight of our girls day. As many of you know our daughters life dream is to become an animal doctor so she jumped at the chance to come go to the vets. But seeing as it was her birthday she wanted to go in her brand new Wonder Woman dress which caused quite a lot of attention which she lapped up of course.

The veterinary nurse at the surgery made a complete fuss of the birthday girl with some chocolates and even took her through that back to see the animals and talk to 'real-life' vets. As you can imagine she came out with big smiles telling us that she was allowed to hold a teeny kitten who needed surgery so her cuddles helped calm him down - it was the sweetest gesture. Not only that but she has been invited back for the day to spend some time at the surgery once this is all over.

If there is one thing that our lockdown party has taught us, it's the impact of expectations. While nothing can quite make up for not being together in person, keeping things small, intimate and connected is the way forward. Just don't forget the party bags!!! Even if it's for three people.

Amelia Rose Turns Six

|
A BIRTHDAY IN LOCKDOWN! With lockdown rules showing no sign of letting up, celebrating birthdays in lockdown is quickly becoming the new normal. And for many younger family members, that means having to shelve plans for birthday parties for celebrating their birthday in lockdown instead. While that might sound sad, it has made way for a creative celebration.

Our daughter was fully aware that party plans had to be a little different this year. We could see she was disappointed that we couldn't go to London or visit the Harry Potter Studio and she wasn't the only one - we were all looking forward to a London adventure.

But children are so resilient and can roll with the change a lot easier than us adults. So with a little ingenuity and a lot of online ordering celebrating our daughter turning six wasn't too bad at all. And according to our little girl it was the best birthday EVER

Our little miss sunshine woke up opened lots of presents and cards from family and friends. A big thank you to everyone who made an effort to send her something we really appreciate that times are a little strange right now. We also wanted to give a special thank you to all those  who made calls, sent videos and messages as they really made her day.

Birthday Breakfast

Every year we love to transform good ol' pancakes into BIRTHDAY CAKE PANCAKES covered in lots of chocolate, strawberries and lots of sprinkles! Well you can't just have cheerios or toast on your birthday but who wouldn't want to tuck into those.

After eating those delicious BRTHDAY CAKE pancakes we headed out to the vets as Winston had a check up about his skin condition and to have his first set of vaccinations. As many of you know our daughters life dream is to become an animal doctor so she jumped at the chance to go to the vets. But seeing as it was her birthday she wanted to go in her brand new Wonder Woman dress and got quite a lot of attention which she lapped up of course.

It was just before lunch and the little lady requested a chicken nugget happy meal and so we all indulged. But they didn't do milkshakes so we were completely devastated, so we make our own banana smoothies which were sooooo good. After lunch we had a couple of socially distanced visitors who were only too happy to come and see the birthday girl.

As our girl was going to be spending her birthday in lockdown we wanted to make her feel extra special. So we had this gorgeous rose pin and white balloon cluster from Home and Dream Events made for her - she absolutely loved her birthday balloons. So we had all the pretty pink party balloons, the table wear and made the cutest pink and gold tablescape. Considering we didn't really have a theme at first it came together nicely.

Before we knew it was dinner time and it was afternoon tea time. My girl loves an afternoon tea and even though it was so hot we dined in a little afternoon tea. We had pretty pink party balloons, played games, opened presents and of course tucked into a little sausage dog cake to go along with her brand new puppy she got a couple of weeks ago.

We had the cutest little set up for our afternoon tea with scones, clotted cream, jams and lots of cheese sandwiches. It was perfect with the three of us. It was beautiful day full of lots of sunshine, good food and lots of tea in pretty little tea cups. We then ended our perfect lockdown birthday with a slice of this adorable sausage dog cake, well we had to really!

The last few weeks in lockdown our daughter has really shown us what a beautiful, kind and caring person she really is and make me feel so proud. Even though she spent her birthday in lockdown and we couldn't spent in the way we planned we all had a wonderful day together.

If there is one thing that our lockdown party has taught us, it's the impact of expectations. While nothing can quite make up for not being together in person, keeping things small, intimate and connected is the way forward. Just don't forget the party bags!!! Even if it's for three people.

6 Years of Amelia Rose

|
Amelia Rose,

Today my sweet daughter, you are 6 years old. I can barely believe it. From the moment you were born, my heart was yours. I looked into those beautiful eyes and knew that you were going to change my whole world completely. All my hopes and dreams came alive in that moment.

I remember laying you in my arms with your soft black black hair, little fingers and toes. You had the cutest ears and the little button nose. You looked up at me and the world melted away, taking my breath with your very first cries. I never knew love until this day and I waited so long to see your face and I will forever cherish you my precious little girl.

Six years of adventures, six years of milestones, six years of memories that I remember as if they happened a moment ago. But most of all, six wonderful years of loving you. I'm in complete awe of the little girl who you have grown into. You still have those beautiful round eyes and that perfect little smile when you laugh. You never hold back when you find something funny and I love that about you. Time and time again you always show me that your sweet side is evened out by your sassy side, oh and you love to be sassy!

Your patience, compassion, empathy and kindness has taught me so much. You are so sweet, loving, creative and you never stop imagining or caring about all your friends and family. You are confident and you are so determined about all the things you want to do and not afraid to say so - it is something that I really admire about you.

You have faced some big struggles in your little life but your strength and perseverance amazes me and seeing you overcome these makes me so proud of you. Please though little lady, if you do ever take anything to heart just know that you are perfect just the way you are. Remember to never allow someone to dull your sparkle, always be yourself and know that you are enough.

A big milestone this year for both of us was signing you up to rainbows. I will never forget your first session and you wanting me to hold your hand and stay for the entire session, but afterwards you told me that you are a big girl and you will be brave enough to go on our own next week.  I felt a pang in the pit of my stomach, and yes I was a little sad because you were growing up, but I was also incredibly proud of you.

One of your favourite things to do is cook with me and you are such a great little helper, unless you need to sieve flour. But you love getting creative in the kitchen developing new recipes and licking the spoon at every opportunity possible. I adore how much you love the world, love the planet and your biggest hope for life is that everyone will work together to help save the animals. You are still pretty determined that one day you will become a vet and we will often find you lining up your toy animals ready for their visit. It's the sweetest playtime with you. I just know that you will always be kind and caring. If only people had a sprinkle of your kind heart the world would be a better place.

You love getting out into the garden for some sunshine and a bit of fresh air to engage with the natural world. You are not afraid of getting dirty and you always get so excited to tell me that plants are growing or your flowers in your fairy garden are blooming. You will happily sit there for hours playing with all the fairies and their houses with imaginative play. I love listening to your amazing little adventures, even when you don't think I'm listening.

You still love to get creative with crafts every chance you can. You are giving and caring and are only too happy to make a picture for friends and family, we often feel so lucky when we are one of those people. You can create something out of an old egg box or milk carton in seconds, your creativity amazes me sometimes. You have this thing for creating little mini houses for all your small toys at the moment and each time you get more creative with your interior skills too.

Although this isn't perhaps how we would have planned your birthday. The world is a strange place at the moment and life feels pretty uncertain. You have not been to school, had a playdate, visited the beach in months. Life is odd. But if anything wonderful has come out of this lockdown is spending so much time with you. You have the best personality full of cheek and sass too, but you really are a wonderful person.

You are such an affectionate child and caring. Positive, bouncy and full of energy. You love a good cuddle and you are strong and determined. It’s not unusual for you to go to sleep singing and wake up singing. You completed our family six years ago and I'm forever grateful that we have been given those six years with you. Everyday with you is an absolute blessing. I love you. Happy 6th Birthday, my little miss sunshine.

Amelia's 6th Birthday Gifts

|
We had so many plans for our little ones birthday and we are feeling incredibly guilty that we can't celebrate the way she wanted. But children are so resilient and tend to adapt easily with change. So a smaller, more intimate celebration is on the cards this year.

With Mimi's birthday just around I thought it was time for a birthday gift guide. I don't know about you but I love these types of post as I'm sometimes I need a little inspiration for gift ideas. So if you're looking for some really simple ideas for a girly girl who loves pink, fairies, unicorns and girl superheroes then you've come to the right place.

Merida Dress Bow & Arrow

Brave has always been one of my daughter's favourite films and she has been asking for a Merida bow and arrow set for some time, but we could never get our hands on a set. With the pandemic and most shops closed we couldn't go and browse in the Disney Store. But thankfully we came across one online which included a moulded bow, four arrows with suckers and an adjustable strap quiver, all finished with details inspired by Merida's own weaponry. My little warrior will love this Brave archery set.

Frozen ll LEGO Jewellery Set

LEGO is always something that ends up on her birthday wish list and she has been asking for lots of Harry Potter and Frozen II sets - there are soooo many to collect. But for her birthday this Frozen II Lego Jewellery Set was a great gift for her.

You can store your own jewellery in this box and you can also have some fun with the two rings that comes with this set. It is such a cute design including the jewellery box and all the space inside it. Elsa’s Jewellery Box Creation includes three LEGO® bags, one full-piece LEGO® horse and some small purple baseplates.

Unicorn Slip On Casual Shoes

My daughter was sucked into the unicorn obsession a while a go, and it's not hard to see why though - they are cute, adorable and unique. So as you can imagine my unicorn loving girl has quite the collection of toys, clothes and accessories but she could always have more. However not only that, during this lockdown she has grown at a crazy rate. Anyone else found their children need new EVERYTHING? I couldn't resist these Unicorn Slip On Casual Shoes that wer under £10 too.

Wonder Woman Shield

Brave, strong and packing some serious weaponry, living life like Wonder Woman would be no bad thing and my daughter wanted to be just like her. So this year we decided to get her a Wonder Woman dress with a detachable cape, leg and wrist covers and a jewelled headband. But to complete her look she needed a little protection and so we grabbed this Wonder Woman Shield too - allowing her to explore her inner hero.

Disney Minnie Mouse Glittery Crossbody Bag

My girl loves accessories at the moment and it really is so sweet seeing her get ready in the morning - she puts on her fake makeup, wears beads galore and finishes her outfit with a cute little bag. And I know that she will love this Disney Minnie Mouse Glittery Crossbody Bag featuring a multicoloured finish, a splendid addition to her wardrobe.

Messy Me Mini Apron

Who doesn’t love to bake? Usually when it comes to baking sweet treats my daughter will sit on the floor entertaining herself with the colander or other kitchen utensils, but now it's time to get her more involved and embrace the whole baking idea with her. Now I must admit, it's not easy and they will get messy.

However before you embark on a little baking session with little ones that have to be well equipped, as we all know how messy little ones can get so what better way to get in the mood for a little bake off than with this adorable personalised apron from Messy Me. They have a gorgeous range of wipe clean aprons that are perfect for budding little chefs and aspiring artists.

A Pupppppppyyyyy!

I'm sure if you have been reading our posts or you are following us on social media you will know that we have just welcomed a new puppy into our family. Say hello to Mr Winston! He was an early birthday present so I know that she will remember this birthday more than most.

So hopefully this will give you some inspiration for gift ideas for a little girl who is turning six. Which gift is your favourite?

Meet Winston

|
So we did something very exciting recently and welcomed a new addition to our family with this gorgeous boy, Winston. 🐾🌭. After talking about getting a dog for some time, we finally took the plunge and decided to get our daughter an early birthday present. Our daughter has been obsessed with sausage dogs for as long as I can remember and both my husband and I fell in love with getting a miniature Dachshund.

We wanted to try and surprise our daughter keeping a new puppy a secret was a lot harder than we thought. We wanted to be prepared for our new addition so we needed to buy a few new puppy essentials and must haves before bringing him home. So we made a few amazon orders as well as getting my husband to sneak out to stock up on some puppy supplies. It was incredibly hard to hide our secret but we somehow managed a whole month.

It was time for the big reveal. We wanted to surprise our daughter in the best way possible and made all the preparations we could so she wouldn't know. We decided to surprise her by placing the puppy in a wicker hamper with all the biggest blue bows we could find. Keeping the puppy quiet while inside the box was difficult as he kept whimpering but the surprise still worked. It was the best puppy reveal.

We thought long and hard about his name but ultimately his name was our daughter's choice and she wanted to call him Winston or Boris. After having a cuddle with him she decided that Winston suited him best and we have to agree. We have had him a little while now and he is such a little sweetie, though he can be a little rascal too.

We couldn't believe how small and delicate Winston really was, he could sit in my hand easily. Winston is so much fun, loves cuddles and likes to follow my husband around like a shadow. But typically puppy behaviour he likes to bite, nibble and poop under the dining room table. It feels so good to have a dog in the house again.

Our first night was really hard and he cried all night. It made me feel really sad so I picked him up and popped him in our bed - just for one night. Every night is getting a little easier, and now we have started to crate train him too so my husband is sleeping downstairs with him until he gets use it.

Winston is a really lucky little puppy as he has so many toys, bones, chews and blankets. However, his favourite toy is the one our daughter gave to him; his little poppy troll. In only a short time he has managed to chew three door mats, our garden plants and some lego pieces. We're loving our Winston though, it will be nice to have someone to keep company when normality resumes with my husband at work and my daughter back at school.

Despite all the amazing things about bringing a new puppy home, after a couple of days with him we noticed a big change in his behaviour and condition. At first it was just a few bald patches here and there but then his coat became dull and flaky with the appearance of more bald patches. Winston started to become lethargic and would sleep a lot more than a puppy should, mealtimes would leave him with a swollen pot belly making it difficult to get in and out of our house for toilet training.

We thought that perhaps it was because he wasn't settling into his new home as well as we had hoped, but we were worried and booked an appointment with our vet immediately. As soon as we arrived at the surgery Winston got a lot of attention because he was so small and a miniature dachshund isn't a breed you see often in Norfolk. The vet saw him straight away and seemed really concerned about him and whisked him through the back. None of us were allowed to go with him due to the social distancing measures that the surgery had in place.

After a little while the vet came back out and told us that she was very concerned and told us that we had a pretty poorly puppy. The vet did a skin scrape, put him on a course of flea, mite and worming prevention. We were advised to change his food to a grain free diet to a combination of Wainwrights Dry Grain Free and James Wellbeloved Wet Food grain free. The vet also prescribed a vitamin called Complivit which needed to be added to his first meal of the day.

Not only that, she also prescribed Coatex Aloe & Oatmeal mild shampoo that we could bath him in once a week, making sure that he massaged coconut oil into his really dry parts of his skin and paws everyday. We have been doing this for the past week and we can already see a big change in his overall wellbeing and he is making big progress.

So that’s Winston, we will keep you updated on his progress and all the amazing adventures we get up to. I'm sure you will catch his adorable face over our social media in the coming weeks, so be sure to go and follow us on our platforms.

BIRCHBOX - June 2020: Born in the USA

|
Introducing the ‘Born in the USA’ June BIRCHBOX! This month, there is a big focus on acknowledging what is happening across the world right now and all those that have been deeply effected. It has been a vary sad and frightening time so it was a touching gesture for Birchbox to add a little note to all subscribers so say that they are listening and want to make a change. Birchbox are listening and made donations to Black Lives Matter, the George Floyd Memorial Fund, Brooklyn Bail Fund, Reclaim The Black and Black Visions Collective. Birchbox have mentioned that this is the beginning and that they are committed to continuing and sharing to fight justice.

The June BIRCHBOX has been perfectly designed to bring the best of beauty across the Atlantic with their stars and stripe designs in red, white and blue. A box filled with 5 beauty must-haves with their June edit that will introduce subscribers to rejuvenating eyes, taming haircare and more to unleash a bit of beauty across the pond. This month subscribers will find a Real Chemistry Peel or Foaming Cleanser, a Magnitone Cleansing Cloth and a Wink Lux Concealer in either Light, Light Beige, Medium, Deep or Rich. It's a goody this month!

Birchbox is £12.95 per month, and it’s a rolling contract so you can cancel your subscription at any time. All beauty boxes are having delays this month due to the global crisis, so don’t panic if your box takes longer than normal to arrive. So without further ado let's take a closer look.

Real Chemistry. Luminous 3-Minute Peel. RRP £48.

This month subscribers could choose either a Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel or a Real Chemistry Fresh Start Foaming Cleanser and so the only choice for me was a peel. You just can't beat a Sunday afternoon with a good face mask or peel to help kick start an evening of self-care. This acid-free (yay for those with sensitive skin) face peel that removes dead skin cells as you massage across your face. Unlike most skincare products that start working after a certain amount of time, this delivers results upon the first use. I didn’t notice much fragrance, and the peel itself is easy and pleasant. Just squeeze a little bit out, and massage onto your face.

Patchology. FlashPatch Rejuvenating Eye Gel Patches. RRP £14.

These Rejuvenating Eye Gel Patches are perfect for rejuvenating tired eyes in the morning. Helping to reduce puffiness, refresh dry skin and visibly brighten to help fake a full eight hours rest, these hard-working gels are an absolute must-try. I loved using these first thing in the morning and that puffiness around the eyes, dryness etc all reduced. I also loved the fact that they didn't slide off my face which tends to happen with a lot of eye patches.

Magnitone WipeOut!. Eco-Friendly Microfibre Cleansing Cloth. RRP £20.

Removing makeup is the bain of my life, it's probably the part of day I least look forward to. So I was intrigued to find this little cloth in my Birchbox this month. You simply wet the cloth and massage over your face to break down impurities and removes all types of makeup. But get this? The 100% bamboo microfibres of this cleansing cloth swell up when wet, grabbing hold of makeup particles and trapping them in a cloth, meaning makeup is removed, smear free. It can last up to 1000 washes, so it's sure to stand the test of time.

Number 4. Jour d'automne Blow Dry Lotion. RRP £25.

I came across Number 4 a few boxes ago with their sugar spray and if was amazing and gave my hair a lot of texture, and their soothing balm is pretty good too. This Blow Dry Lotion minimises frizz, restores softness and protects against humidity and heat damage. Part thermal protector and part leave in treatment, this lotion helps your hair dry up to 50% faster and is packed with natural botanicals to keep your strands healthy. I have tried using this a couple of times and even though my hair feels super smooth and soft, it still took me the same amount of time to dry my hair - so it shortfalls on that part.

Winky Lux. Peeper Perfect Concealer in Light Beige. RRP £14.

Every tired mama needs bright eyes and this Winky Lux full coverage concealer will diffuse the look of uneven skin tone, blemishes and other imperfections. This concealer also contains collagen, hyaluronic acid, grapeseed extract, olive oil, and vitamin E to help my tired mama eyes. I’m shocked at how much I love this concealer! It’s a hydrating formula with good coverage and a natural radiant finish. A little goes a long way with this concealer, it can be really thick but the coverage you get is very nice. Easy to blend out and doesn’t look cakey on the skin.

I LOVED my Birchbox this month! It was full of product that I would normally use and I have made some new discoveries, which is my favourite part about being a subscriber! A lot of these products are going to be great for when I have some self care Sundays that's for sure.

So what did you think? Are you a Birchbox fan? If not, you should at least try a couple of boxes. A monthly Birchbox subscription, with no long-term commitment, costs just £10 (+ £2.95 P&P) per month.

Don't forget to check out our previous Birchbox boxes...
