How To Create The Perfect Media Kit

In the wonderful world of blogging, a media kit is a kind of big thing. I don't think I ever received that memo when I came into the blogging world, that was most definitely a big mistake. For one reason or another creating a media kit was never on top of my list, until I gave myself a push to try and be more proactive with my blog, and so I would love to talk media kits with you. A media kit is an essential part of you and your blog, it gives you the opportunity to showcase your abilities as a blogger when you are unable to do so yourself. So this week, a media kit was something that was on top of my list, and it honestly didn't take me long to do. Let's talk some more about media kits and what you should include when creating one, but first (for those who don't know) what exactly is a media kit?

FIRST, WHAT IS A MEDIA KIT?

A media kit is a document that gives you an opportunity to showcase your skills and abilities as a blogger, something that is given to potential brands or advertisers that you want to collaborate with. When you get around to creating one (sooner rather than later) use it as an opportunity to show your personality as well as your qualities as a blogger. A media kit will let those potential brands about you, your blog, what topics you cover and how many followers you have over your social media platforms. All in one a eye-catching document. You can also take the opportunity to provide a list of collaboration options, prices, and services you offer. If working with brands is something that you really want to do, or you are thinking about then you really should create a media kit, normally around 1-2 pages, similar to when you make a CV or resume. By having a media kit readily available and up to date will show brands that you are professional but you will also show them your personality and your creative side.

DO YOU NEED ONE?

In a nutshell, yes of course you do especially is you want to start working with brands. A media kit is a great way to communicate with brands or advertisers, it can also show them that you know what you are doing. It will help make you stand out, look professional and show a brand why they should be working with you on collaborations. Not only these points, but by providing potential brands with a media kit will save you so much time writing emails back and forth, making more time to focus on the ultimate pitch to them, rather than an overload of information on the first point of contact.

WHAT SHOULD YOU INCLUDE IN A MEDIA KIT?

A short bio about you and your blog

Well, this one kind of goes without saying really. But still use this chance to explain who you are, what you do and what purpose your blog serves, or your niche. It's the perfect time to be creative with this bio and really stand out, try and show your personality. Don't be afraid to be different, brands are more likely to appreciate you sharing something personal as that way they may be able to connect with you on a different level in the beginning, which shows that there are very interested. I have already has a response with the use of my media kit where a brand has asked a number of questions about my daughter and my obsession with tea, so it can help break up conversations and make them even more interesting. In this part of the media kit include your blog too, perhaps mentions your niche and the topics that you cover, you could even go to talk about your achievements and being featured on other websites.

Graphics

Always try and showcase your brand with images, as you will soon realise a media kit contains quite a bit of text, so liven up your media kit with some beautiful images. Why not add a little character to your media kit by including photos or images from around your blog. These could either be some feature images or even a couple of example photos showing your photography skills off, this will soon give any brand interested in working with you and get a feel for you and what a potential collaborate could entail.

Blog Statistics + Reach

* Unique Visitors per month

* Page views per month

* Subscribers for a mailing list

You should definitely include a few blog statistics and reach within your media kit. It's very important to keep these up to date and to make sure that the date is within the last three months or so. I like to update mine every month. It wouldn't be very helpful you are relying on statistics from last month, a lot can happen with a blog in that amount of time. I would also recommend including your social media following per platform, along with each handle. This way if a brand is trying to focus on a certain platforms for showcasing their brand they will easily be able to see if your blog fits with their vision for their brand. For my own media kit I included my tops form social media platforms and also included the number of my email subscriptions.

Collaboration offers

It would also be a great idea to include what you could offer a brand for collaborations. There are so many ways in which you can work with a brand so always mention the different ways you could cater to specific brands, as some are looking for Instagram post, tweets or a whole blog post dedicated to their brand. The typical ones that are normally included are Sponsored Posts, Product Reviews, Giveaways, Advertising, Social Media Promotion, or Freelance Writing but cater to your needs and potential brands. If there is a unique way you can work with brand then add that in too, a lot of brands like the idea of videos so perhaps there is a way in which you and your blog can stand out from the rest. As well as listing what you can offer a brand you may also like to include a few policies that they would have to adhere to when working with you, such as payment being required within a certain time frame.

Packages & rates

When it comes to talking about money, it can always feel a little awkward, I know I always feel awkward, but know your worth. Especially if a brand has gone out of their way to make contact with you and you have exchanged a couple emails and no one has mentioned fee whatsoever, try to remember you're unique and they reached out for a reason. However if you're pitching (something you should do every week) then to save confusion outline your services, base-level pricing and perhaps mention what the brand will get for that fee, it will avoid any confusion from the get go. I would however recommend that you mention that you can cater to each brand according to their requirements as well as your own and always think about altering terms and prices too (but never below your standard rate)

Brands you have worked with

If you have had the opportunity to work with a few brands already then try and include them on your media kit. When it comes to you, you can probably talk all day about how amazing you are and what you can offer a brand in return for a small fee. It is always a good idea to try, if you can, include a few testimonials on your media kit and a small list of the brands that you have worked with. It gives a brand the opportunity to actually see who they are going to work with. Everyone can talk all day about how great they are to work with, but seeing a few recommendations from past collaborations will help seal the deal. If you haven't managed to get some feedback with some of your collaborations, it is never too late to go back and ask. It also an opportunity to read about what you are like and perhaps improve your connections.
